How Frequently Should I Take My Dog To The Vet?

Apr 18, 2019

Veterinary care is important to a dog’s health and care

As parents to our pets it is our responsibility to take care of furry little guys including things they might not enjoy, like vet visits. Veterinary care is important to a dog’s health and haleness.

The general idea is that all dogs should get checked regularly, it is important in order to make sure everything is okay and vaccinations are up to date. The frequency however depends largely on the age and lifestyle of the dog we are talking about.

The more serious and compelling reason to see the vet is when your animal companion is ill. How does one apprehend if your animal companion is sick and you need to visit the vet?

  • If your dog’s appetite has diminished relative to normal, your dog is sick.
  • If your dog seems less active than usual, lethargic, or depressed; is lying around more; or is less interactive, it’s time for a vet visit.
  • If your dog is vomiting or has diarrhoea or loose stools, go to the vet.

PUPPIES

The puppy year is an important time to follow your vet’s suggestions as these are some of the times when a dog is most dependent on its owner’s help. It will also let your vet get a feel for your dog’s mannerisms and health in order to properly diagnose problems in the future as they move on to the adult stage.

ADULTS (AGES 2-8)

Adult age dogs visit the vet for regular check-ups and sometimes receive booster shots if needed. When at these check-ups, your vet will let you know anything you may need to ensure your dog stays tip top throughout their adult life. Even though your adult dog is healthy it is still recommended they visit the vet at least once a year and many pet parents may ignore this suggestion but it could be very beneficial if your dog has a hidden illness or injury.

SENIORS (8+)

As soon as your dog reaches their elder years around 8 years old they become susceptible to certain illnesses and health problems that may have not been too much of a concern before. There are some preventative measures you can take to ensure the best for your elderly companion. The first thing you will want to do is visit your vet at least once every six months in order to stay on top of any illnesses your dog may face.

So, how often should you see the vet?

  • At least annually for dogs under 10 years of age
  • At least every six months for those 10 years and older
  • Immediately if signs of illness are noted

No one knows your dog the way you do so if you believe your dog need to go to the vet or emergency room don't be afraid.

The Bottom Line is Preventative healthcare at all ages can prolong your dog’s life. And once you discover the vet you like, it’ll be a pleasure to go to them minimum of once per year.
